Braid gives excellent sensitivity and direct contact, which is useful for soft bait fishing, vertical presentations, long casts and precise lure control. Fluorocarbon is often used as a leader to improve discretion, resist abrasion and protect the rig around rocks, weed beds, structures or fish teeth.

Nylon remains useful in some situations thanks to its stretch, suppleness and forgiveness during the fight. It can suit lighter fishing, wary fish or rigs that benefit from extra shock absorption.
