Jig heads for straight retrieves and vertical fishing are designed to present a soft lure at the right depth, maintain contact with the bottom or the water layer, and give a shad a stable swimming action. They are essential for targeting zander, perch, pike or sea bass with shads, finesse lures, slugs and other soft baits.

On a straight retrieve, the jig head must help the lure swim correctly, keep its rolling action and stay at the right depth during the retrieve. A head that is too heavy drops too fast and restricts the swimming action. A head that is too light will not hold depth or maintain contact with the lure, especially in current, wind or deep water.

In vertical fishing, control is even more important. Weight must match depth, boat drift, current and lure size. For zander, a controlled presentation close to the bottom can make the difference. In traction or bottom work, the head shape affects the fall, bottom contact and ability to come through cover.
