Fly fishing leaders and tippets for clean presentation and reliable strength

The leader and tippet form the final connection between fly line and fly. Their diameter, stiffness, length and material influence turnover, presentation, sink rate and strength. A balanced setup should remain discreet while still giving enough control for the fly, the current and the fish being targeted.

This category includes nylon and fluorocarbon tippet material, tapered leaders, backing, spool holders and leader accessories for dry fly, nymphing, streamer fishing, stillwater, saltwater and other fly-fishing situations.

Nylon or fluorocarbon?

• Nylon: supple and elastic, well suited to dry-fly fishing and delicate presentations.
• Fluorocarbon: denser and more abrasion-resistant, useful for nymphing, subsurface fishing, stillwater and technical presentations.

Tapered leaders and tippet

A tapered leader transfers energy from the fly line toward the fly. The tippet section then lets you adjust diameter, length and material without replacing the whole leader. Fine tippet can improve discretion, while stronger diameters are needed for larger flies, streamer fishing and stronger fish.

Backing and accessories

Backing sits between the reel and fly line. It provides extra running line when a fish takes distance and also helps fill the spool correctly. Spool holders and leader accessories keep several tippet sizes organised and accessible so the setup can be adapted quickly at the water's edge.

Choose by technique

• Dry fly: supple leader systems and finer tippet for controlled, discreet presentation.
• Nymphing: fluorocarbon is often useful where density, contact and abrasion resistance matter.
• Streamer: stronger tippet and robust leader material help turn over larger flies.
• Stillwater and saltwater: adjust diameter, abrasion resistance and backing capacity to the species and conditions.
