Fishing nylon for leaders, tippets and main line

Nylon remains a useful material for fly fishing, trout fishing and stronger rigs because it combines flexibility, elasticity and reliable knot performance. The right choice depends on diameter, fly size, current, target species and whether the line is being used as tippet, leader material or main line.

Nylon for dry fly and fine presentation

For dry-fly fishing, nylon is often a natural choice because its flexibility helps with softer presentation and more natural drifts. Finer diameters improve discretion, but going too fine can reduce knot strength and make turnover less reliable.

Nylon or fluorocarbon?

Nylon is generally more supple and elastic, while fluorocarbon is denser and usually more abrasion-resistant. Nylon works especially well for surface fishing, delicate presentation and situations where a little stretch is useful. Fluorocarbon is often preferred for subsurface fishing, nymphing and more abrasive environments.

Choose diameter for the technique

• Dry fly: fine, supple nylon for softer turnover and presentation.
• Nymphing: choose diameter according to depth, contact and fish size.
• Light streamers: stronger nylon helps turn over larger flies and absorb strikes.
• Strong rigs: larger diameters suit bigger fish, abrasion and more powerful setups.

Check knots and worn sections

Nylon can lose strength when it becomes nicked, kinked or damaged by abrasion. Wet knots before tightening, pull them down progressively and inspect the line after contact with rocks, branches or other rough surfaces.

Tippet, leader or main line

Small tippet spools are convenient for rebuilding the fine end of a fly leader. Tapered or hand-built leaders transfer energy from fly line to fly. Longer spools are better suited to main-line use or stronger fishing applications.
