Tenya

The Tenya category brings together sea fishing jig heads and rigs designed to present a prawn, shrimp, natural bait or sometimes a soft bait close to the bottom. Originally from Japan, tenya sits between bait fishing and lure fishing: the bait keeps its natural appeal while the weighted head helps control the fall, drift and presentation.

A tenya usually has a main hook for rigging the bait and an assist hook to improve hook-up rates. This rig is especially used for sparids such as gilthead sea bream, red porgy, common pandora, seabream and other bottom-feeding fish, but it can also tempt sea bass, gurnard and rock fish.

Choose by weight, depth, current, bait size and boat drift. A lighter model keeps a more natural presentation in light current; a heavier model sinks faster and maintains better bottom contact. Wider shapes can help stabilise the bait and reduce snagging.

Keep the action subtle: controlled fall, regular bottom contact, short lifts, pauses and slow retrieves. The aim is to make the bait look alive without making it suspicious. Stay in touch with the line, as bites from sea bream and sparids can be either sharp or very delicate.
