The Insect Lures category brings together lures that imitate larvae, terrestrial insects, cicadas, water bugs, small creatures and compact prey. They are useful when fish feed on the surface, under overhanging trees, along banks, in grass or around shallow holding spots.

Small soft insects, larvae and nymph-style baits are especially useful for trout, chub, perch and wary fish. They can be fished on a drift, light drop shot, small jig head, weightless rig or with a very discreet single hook. The idea is often to offer a natural, slow and easy meal.

Bugs, cicadas, woodlouse shapes, tubes, compact craws and larger creature baits also target black bass and predators holding tight to cover. On the surface, a floating insect can be placed under a tree, along a bank or close to lily pads. On a light Texas rig, it comes through cover more easily while keeping a clean presentation.

Choose by size, buoyancy, density, vibration level, scent and colour. Natural tones work well in clear water; brighter or more contrasted colours help in stained water, low light or when you need the lure to stand out in a precise spot.

Keep the action subtle: controlled drift, small shakes, short twitches, long pauses or a free fall. Bites on insect lures can be very light. Keep contact with the line, watch follows and give the fish time to inhale the bait before setting the hook.
