Vertical Jig

The Vertical Jig category brings together metal jigs made for vertical saltwater fishing, mainly from a boat. Their job is to sink quickly, keep contact with the line and work in the right layer of water even when depth, wind or current make presentation harder.

A vertical jig differs from a casting jig because it is fished under the boat, and from a slow jig because it gives a more direct approach to the bottom, the water column or active fish. It is useful on drop-offs, rock marks, wrecks, reefs, ledges, holes and deep areas where saltwater predators hold close to structure.

This technique targets sea bass, pollack, dentex, snapper, amberjack, bonito, mackerel, tuna and other predatory fish. Choose the jig by weight, profile, density, depth, drift speed, current and rod power.

A slim jig sinks fast and keeps a better vertical line in current. A wider jig gives more side movement and flash on the fall. Hook setup, single or assist hook, should match the target fish and the speed of the action.

Work it with sharp jerks, long lifts, controlled drops or fast retrieves over several metres. Bites can come close to the bottom, mid-water or on the fall: keep contact, explore different depths and change weight as soon as the line angle becomes too wide.
