On a nymph’s thorax, the tip pulls out a few fibers from the dubbing to suggest the legs. It also frees any fibers that have become caught under a wrap or a ring. To apply varnish, place just a small drop on the tip before touching the fly’s head. Then clean the needle before reusing it on the fibers: dried varnish clings to the material and makes this work less precise.
