The difference in design compared to the BK438 mainly concerns the handling during assembly. The BK457 retains the guided thread all the way to the shank while positioning the spool farther away. The rings on the tube prevent the thread from fraying at the points where it passes through. The thread must unroll smoothly to create the smooth base layers that will hold a quill or tinsel. Check the thread feed before tying, as even a trace of dried varnish can snag a guide equipped with rings.
