The small comb separates the fibers before they are attached to the hook. The brush is then used to free any fibers caught in a loop or under a wrap. On a nymph thorax, a few short strokes are enough to bring out the fibers that represent the legs. On a streamer, brush in the direction of the wing to smooth out the material.
