The Bates E.D.C 100 is a size 100 casting reel built around a cast aluminium frame. The structure is designed to be rigid yet lightweight for regular use. The internal mechanics are based on 12+1 bearings and a 100 mm crank handle. The Digitally Assisted Brake system uses a digital chip combined with an electromagnetic brake applied to the spool during casting. The chip measures rotation speed several thousand times per second and automatically adjusts braking resistance. Braking increases at high speed to limit wigging, then decreases as the spool slows to maintain casting distance. The system works without batteries or recharging, thanks to the energy generated as the spool rotates.
