Select a feather from the scalp whose fiber length matches the fly pattern. Remove the down from the base before attaching the quill. For a wet fly, space the fibers far enough apart so they remain free to fold back. For a nymph, instead take a few separate fibers and place them under the wing case. The SKS is thus suitable for fly patterns that require legs or a flexible collar.
