Remove any fibers that are too short before preparing the first tuft. Build up the wing in several small layers to control its thickness and distribute the colors. Slightly staggered lengths create a tapered shape without cutting all the tips to the same length. As the wing gains volume, monitor the space around the curve and the tip of the hook. Stop adding material before the hackle covers this area.
