La plupart des prédateurs marins ont l’habitude de consommer des céphalopodes, et plus particulièrement les calamars. Ils sont faciles à chasser, ne possèdent pas de moyens de défense comme les poissons (ex : épines dorsales) et constituent un apport protéinique conséquent. Certains carnassiers marins en font d’ailleurs une consommation presque exclusive comme par exemple les espadons. Des études ont ainsi prouvé que 90 % de la nourriture du xyphias était constitué uniquement de calamars ! Dans nos eaux, casserons et chipirons sont également un met de choix pour l’intégralité des prédateurs marins, – et ce, quelle que soit leur taille : bars, maigres, lieus, dentis, morues, sérioles, pagres, thons, etc. Enfin, il ne faut pas oublier que les jeunes céphalopodes à leur stade larvaire forment une partie importante de la nourriture de la plupart des poissons!
