Fly Fishing Tippet Rings

Fly fishing tippet rings for changing tippet without shortening the leader

Tippet rings are small metal rings placed between the tapered leader and the tippet section. They let you replace nylon or fluorocarbon tippet several times without progressively cutting back the tapered part of the leader.

They are useful for dry-fly fishing, nymphing and stillwater setups where tippet diameter, length or material may need to change during the day.

Why use a tippet ring?

Without a ring, every tippet change removes a little more of the tapered leader. A tippet ring creates a fixed connection point so the leader remains more consistent while only the terminal section is replaced.

Dry fly, nymph and stillwater use

For dry flies, choose a light and discreet ring that does not disturb presentation. In nymphing or stillwater fishing, a slightly stronger ring can be useful when changing fluorocarbon sections, indicators or stronger tippet.

Choose the right size

The ring should match the tippet diameter, fly size, current and target fish. A ring that is too large adds unnecessary weight, while an undersized ring may become the weak point in a stronger setup.

Use reliable knots

The ring does not replace a good knot. Wet and tighten both connections progressively, then check them after snags, fish or abrasion. Replace damaged tippet or rings when necessary.
