The DOHIKU SKK rooster scalp provides feathers for hackles, palmers, and fly details. Harvesting from the scalp allows for a choice of sizes for each part of the fly tie.
For a collar, compare the length of the fibers to the hook gap. For a palmer, also make sure the quill is long enough to wrap around the body in spaced-out turns. Trim the base of the feather before attaching it so as not to make the head too thick. Solid or patterned colors alter the hackle’s pattern once it’s wrapped. Choose them based on the body they’ll accompany, keeping fiber length as your primary criterion.
