To determine the right size for the hackle, compare the length of the fibers to the hook gape. The total length of the feather alone is not enough to judge the size of the hackle collar. On a dry fly, space out the wraps without stacking them; for a palmer fly, space them out along the body. Then wrap a tight, fine wrap to secure the feather. Handle the fibers by their bases to keep the tips intact.
